Subject Information File relates to William Burke's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920. William Burke claimed that he had joined the IRB (Irish Republican Brotherhood) in 1913 and was a member of the Irish Volunteers at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising. He claimed that he stood to under arms at that time. Between then and the end of the War of Independence William Burke claimed that he: did despatch work; took part in anti-Conscription activity; collected funds; took part in raids for arms and the making of arms dumps; took part in a raid for petrol, the burning of Malranny RIC Barracks and of a motor car being used for transporting police; took part in an ambush on the Westport road; and was arrested on 19 May 1921 in connection with the killing of RIC Sergeant [Francis] Butler - subject did not claim any role in this shooting. William Burke stated that he was interned in Galway jail, Oranmore internment camp and Rath Camp on the Curragh until his release on 13 December 1921. Following his release William Burke was appointed Battalion Drill Instructor. He took the anti-Treaty side during the Civil War and claimed to have served/taken part in fighting against the National Army in counties Mayo and Galway at Newport, Glenhest, Buccagh, Shramore, Furnaur, Clifden, Maam, Kilmilkin, Culmore, Bleachyard and Crossmolina. Arrested in early March 1923, William Burke was interned in Galway jail and Tintown No. 2 internment camp until his release in December 1923.
