Subject Information File relates to the award of a military service pension to Liam Ó Coinín (William Rabbett) in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 11 July 1921 during the War of Independence. Subject is referred to as a native Irish speaker on file and some of the material is in the Irish language. Liam Ó Coinín was appointed Company Officer Commanding in 1918. Subject and references stated that during the War of Independence he: did organisational and training work; took part in anti-Conscription activity; did Republican court work; took part in raids for arms; took part in the destruction of Tourmakeady (Toormakeady) RIC Barracks; spent [July to December] 1920 in Liverpool, England where he served with the IRA there taking part in arson attacks; took part in attacks/engagements with British forces at Partry/Port Royal, Tourmakeady (Toormakeady) and on the Partry Mountains; did guard and scouting duty for the Active Service Unit when in his area and assisted with the transport of arms. Liam Ó Coinín appears to have left the IRA when he took up a teaching position in Athlone in about September 1921. He took no part in the Civil War.
