File relates to John Duffy's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1919.
John Duffy claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising and he was under arms but had no active service at the time.
Between 1917 and the end of the War of Independence John Duffy claimed that he: was appointed Company Officer Commanding in 1917; took part in anti-Conscription activity; did election work; was involved in organisational and training work with his own and other companies; was imprisoned during September and October 1919 for illegal drilling; ordered and took part in raids for arms; took part in the burning of Cushlough and Carrowkennedy RIC Barracks; did Republican court work; took part in raids for petrol at Westport Railway Station; served with the Battalion and Brigade active service units and took part in engagements at Skirdagh, Kilmeena, Clogher and Carrowkennedy; and mobilised for operations which did not come off.
John Duffy stated that during the Truce period he took part in IRA training camps and served in the IRA garrison at Westport Workhouse.
Subject and references stated that during the Civil War John Duffy was detailed for intelligence work in the Westport area. It is stated that he also took part in attacks on: Westport Railway Station in August 1922; Castlebar and Westport in September 1922; Westport Town Hall in October 1922; and Westport Workhouse in December 1922. It is further stated that he: assisted in the disarming of a National Army patrol in Westport in October 1922; did guard and escort duty for IRA forces and officers moving through his area; assisted in the escape of IRA prisoners from National Army custody in Westport - including the future journalist and writer Seamus McCall; constructed a dugout used by IRA officers while in the area; stored and transported arms. John Duffy stated that he was arrested and detained briefly in Westport about Easter 1923.
