Subject Information File relates to Patrick Boyle's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920. File also relates to subject's applications under the Army Pensions Acts and his receipt of a special allowance between 1962 and his death in 1964. Subject and references claimed that Patrick Boyle joined Na Fianna Éireann in Castlebar, County Mayo, in 1915 and stood to awaiting orders at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising. He is stated to have transferred to the Irish Volunteers in 1918. Between 1918 and the end of the War of Independence in 1921 it is claimed that Patrick Boyle: was involved in anti-Conscription activity; did election work; took part in raids for arms; took part in raids for rate books and on solicitors' offices; assisted in the making of ammunition and storing of equipment; took part in the capture of two British officers at Farney in April 1921; took part in the IRA occupation of Westport; served with an active service unit and took part in engagements at Kilmeena and Skirdagh; and mobilised for a number of operations/attacks which did not come off. During the Truce period subject claimed that he took part in IRA training camps, gave instruction in musketry, and took part in the takeover of barracks and jails from British forces. It is also stated that he was appointed Battalion Director of Training during this time. Following the outbreak of the Civil War Patrick Boyle took part in the burning of Castlebar Barracks and Jail and joined an active service unit and took part in IRA attacks in Castlebar. He was captured by National Army forces in September 1922 and interned in Athlone until released due to his mother's illness in May or June 1923. He claimed that due to his activities after his release he had to go on the run until the general release of prisoners.
