Subject Information File relates to John Richard Gibbons’ receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period, and Civil War. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) Gibbons states he was a member of 3 Battalion (Westport), 1 West Mayo Brigade and manufactured munitions, concealed arms, assisted Brigade Quartermaster Tom Kittrick (MSP34REF971) in purchasing arms in Dublin, carried raids for petrol and took part in ambushes at Westport, Kilmaine, Skerdagh, Clogher, and Carrowkennedy. During the Truce Period Gibbons states he attended training camps and full time station in Barracks. During the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) Gibbons took the anti-treaty side and took part in ambushes at Clifden, Newport and Castlebar. File includes; sworn statement of John Richard Gibbons made before the Advisory Committee (14 February 1935); letters of reference from Joseph McBride (11 February 1934); Michael Kilroy MSP34REF839 (14 February 1935); Edward Moane MSP34REF50 (11 February 1935); correspondence and memoranda; notification of the death of John Richard Gibbons (1968). DP1711 file relates to John Richard Gibbon’s application for a Wound or Disease Pension or Gratuity under the Army Pensions Act 1932. Gibbons claimed in respect of Pulmonary Tuberculosis which he contracted while in active service. Gibbon’s claim was rejected on the grounds that he did not reach the minimum degree of disablement required.
