File relates to Peter Tuohy’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Subject unsuccessfully applied for service with the Irish Volunteers and the IRA in the periods between 01 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce Period and Civil War. Subject was awarded a Service (1917-1921) Medal in 1945, information held on file.
Peter Tuohy states that he was appointed Company Captain of C Company (Islandeady), 1 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade, Irish Volunteers in 1917 under the command of Michael Staunton. During the 1917-19 period, he claims that he took part in drilling; training; collecting arms; anti-Conscription campaign; canvassing for general election and raids on Congested Districts Board for tools and gelignite.
During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), the subject remained Company Captain (112 members) under the command of Patrick Jordan (1D395). He state that he took part in routine IRA activity and operations including: collecting the Dáil Éireann loan; police duty in connection with the Republican Courts; intelligence work; dispatch work; arms raids; burning of Islandeady Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Barracks (Easter 1920); helping to form and equip IRA ‘Flying Column’ (Active Service Unit); mobilising for planned ambush which was called off and care of arms dump.
Peter Tuohy was captured by British forces on 15 April 1921 in a round up and interned in Galway Prison and the Rath Camp, the Curragh, County Kildare until 09 December 1921 when he was released as part of the general amnesty for IRA prisoners under the terms of the Anglo-Irish Treaty. Subject did not attend any IRA training camps or go into any barracks. He also did not resume his previous role as company captain but remained an IRA member under the command of James Chambers (MSP34REF2993).
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War, Peter Tuohy states that under the command of Michael Kilroy (MSP34REF839) and Eamon Moane (MSP34REF50) he was engaged in sentry duty; sheltering IRA men on the run; blocking roads; destruction of railway bridges; cutting of telegraph poles and wires and intelligence work.
