Subject Information File relates to Martin Lynch's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and the IRA for part of the periods between 23 April 1916 and 30 June 1922 and with the National Forces for part of the periods between 1 July 1922 and 30 September 1923. Lynch states he was a member of C Company, 2 Battalion, Dublin Brigade in the Irish Volunteers under Eamon Price between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917. He claims he took part in an attack on the Magazine Fort in Phoenix Park (24 April 1916) and was then attached to Headquarters at the GPO and in the Metropole Hotel on O’Connell street under the orders of Michael Collins. Lynch was arrested and interned in Stafford Jail and then Frongoch until December 1916. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) Lynch was made Battalion Adjutant, 5 Battalion, Carlow Brigade and was engaged in organising, training and equipping the Battalion. Lynch states he left Carlow Brigade 6 January 1920 and was appointed Brigade Adjutant of the Laois (Leix) Brigade. He organised and took part in raids for arms, the destruction of Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Barracks and income tax offices and was arrested on 5 April 1920 in connection with destroying RIC Barracks. He was interned in Mountjoy and was released after nine days hunger striking. He states he was arrested again on 4 May 1921 and interned in Hare Park and Rath Camp until his release in December 1921. Lynch states he joined the Garda Síochána 1 April 1922 and in June 1922 during the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) he claims he volunteered for service on “protection of the railways, roads and canals” after Michael Collins “called on Garda to do so.” File includes; statements regarding Lynch’s service from Michael Lennon (23 February 1926); Peadar McMahon (10 March 1926); Kevin O’Higgins (31 May 1926); TF Higgins (1 June 1926); Eamon Price (18 June 1926); income assessments; life certificates; correspondence and memoranda.
