Subject Information |
File relates to Maurice Michael Fitzgerald’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period, and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods.
Fitzgerald states he was the Medical Officer of 1 Battalion (Galtee), East Limerick Brigade.
During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) Fitzgerald states he attended to the wounded in the Knocklong train raid (Dan Breen and Sean Treacy), to Sean Meade wounded in Ballylanders Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Barracks attack, Liam Hayes (MSP34REF2365) wounded in Dromkeen Ambush, Bourke and Fogarty wounded in Grange Ambush, John Riordan (DP6341) wounded (and died) in the Gallyspillane Ambush (Limerick), Thomas Casey wounded at Galtee Castle, Michelstown, Tom Murphy (DP8364) and David Tobin (DP23678) killed at Ballinalacken, the wounded at Lackelly Ambush, Timothy Quinlan wounded at Riversfield and general attendance to any illness or injury to any member of the Active Service Unit (ASU/Flying Column).
During the Truce period Fitzgerald states he continued attending to ill or wounded men.
During the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) Fitzgerald does not appear to have taken a definitive stance but continued rendering medical attention to the IRA East Limerick Brigade and also seemingly to National Forces members.
