File relates to John Mulgrew’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of the IRA in the service periods between 01 April 1920 and 31 March 1921 during the War of Independence.
John Mulgrew states that he was attached to the London Battalion, IRA in the 1920-21 period under the command of Tom Kerr (Battalion Commandant) and Rory O’Connor (DP6664) (O/C Britain). During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), the applicant claims that he took part in the burning of warehouses in Liverpool city (20 November 1920). He gave references as John Lynchehan (MSP34REF3953) (Section Leader), Charles Barrett (MSP34REF18700), Peter Rowland (MSP34REF17726) and Patrick Fleming (MSP34REF13672). Subject claims that he served up until the Civil War (June 1922).
Subject did not appear before the Advisory Committee and did not provide any references.
File includes handwritten copy of letter of reference from Patrick Fleming (Adjutant, No. 1 Area, Britain) to support subject’s applicant to join the McSweeney Club, Clan na Gael in Cleveland, Ohio, United States of America (12 April 1924) and handwritten notes of discussion with IRA verifying officers Daly, Early and Horan (“Early doesn’t know”) (20 September 1940). Letter on file to applicant at 75 Messina Avenue, Kilburn, London NW6 was returned on 01 October 1941 with note “not known at this address”.
