Subject Information File relates to Patrick J Kelly’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period, and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Kelly was a member of 4 Battalion (Louisburgh), West Mayo Brigade. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) Kelly states he was in charge of the administration of the Battalion area including the Republican Courts, he also states he over-powered a Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) patrol in order to rescue prisoners, raided mails, took part in an attack on Drummin RIC Baracks and an ambush at Carrowkennedy (2 June 1921). He claims he was absent from service between 22 April to 28 May 1921 owing to a bullet wound in his arm. During the Truce period Kelly states he took part in drilling, arming and making dugouts. During the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) Kelly took the anti-treaty side and states he arranged for the safe conduct and billeting of the Active Service Units (ASU/Flying Column), captured and disarmed ‘enemy troops’ (National Forces) and captured a National Forces garrison at Clifden (29 October 1922). He states he was constantly on the run avoiding arrest.
