Subject Information
File relates to John Bradley’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. John Bradley claimed that he was appointed Company Officer Commanding in 1919. He claimed that during the War of Independence he: did organisational and training work; took part in raids for arms; served with an active service unit; took part in the burning of Murrisk RIC Barracks and the Clogher Cross ambush. In his statement on file Edward Moane stated that Bradley also took part in the Carrowkennedy ambush, however Bradley did not not claim to have been involved himself. John Bradley stated that during the Truce period he took part in IRA training camp and went into an IRA barracks. Following the outbreak of the Civil War Bradley served with an active service unit and took part in engagements against National Army forces at Newport and Clifden. Captured in October 1922 he was interned in Athlone and the Curragh until his release in December 1923. He also claimed that he was on hunger strike for an unspecified period during his internment. File includes: material submitted by John Bradley in support of his application; transcripts of sworn statements made before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 by John Bradley (2 pages) on 5 April 1935 and E Moane TD (1 page) on 17 July 1935; two standard form Referee R.15 showing details of subject’s rank and unit strength as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from records supplied by JL Baker and the West Mayo Brigade IRA Committee; death certificate for John Bradley; material relating to the settlement and closure of John Bradley’s military service pension following his death on 12 September 1947; and material relating to subject’s father and a surviving sister.
