| Subject Information |
File relates to Sarah O'Donnell’s unsuccessful application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of the death of her son John O'Donnell who died on 19 November 1928. Cause of death recorded as perforation of duodenum and toxaemia. It was found that the death of the deceased was due to disease attributable to his military service.
Applicant claims that the deceased died as a result of illtreatment in prison and exposure prior to his arrest. Noted in file that O'Donnell was a transport driver and dispatch rider for the Active Service Unit (Flying Column). Stated that he was on the run and suffered from wettings. Claimed that he was imprisoned in Galway, Athlone and the Curragh, [County Kildare] from December 1922 until March 1923.
The Military Service Registration Board recognised service within the meaning of Part II of the Army Pensions Act, 1932 between 1921 and 1923.
File contains: report from social welfare officer, Mayo detailing Sarah O'Donnell’s circumstances and dependency on deceased at the time of his death; Military Service Registration Board references from Patrick J Gallagher, Sean Lynchehan, Peter Gallagher and Bartley Hegarty.
