Subject Information File relates to James Malone’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period, and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Malone was a member of A Company (Wesport) 3 Battalion, 1 West Mayo Brigade. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) Malone states he was engaged in making pikes and munitions, teaching drills, was a member of the Active Service Unit (ASU/Flying Column and took part in fights at Clogher Cross, Carrowkennedy and Redbridge. During the Truce period Malone states in was in training camps at Shean Lodge, Ballycroy and later went to Westport then Castlebar Barracks. During the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) Malone took the anti-treaty side and was a member of the Divisional ASU. He states he took part in a number of attacks in Collooney including one on the court house and a fight in Boyle. Malone claims he was taken prisoner and sent to Athlone but escaped and joined a Column in Claremorris (Mayo) where he took part in a fight at Brize but was wounded and captured again. He was imprisoned until the general release in November 1924.
