Subject Information |
File relates to William Joseph Malone’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period, and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Malone was a member of A Company (Westport), 3 Battalion, 1 West Mayo Brigade.
As a member of the Irish Volunteers Malone states he scouted for a Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) Barracks attack in Westport, clashed with RIC 14 March 1918 before the trial of ‘E Moane’ and was arrested on 16 March 1918 and sentenced to twelve months imprisonment in Dundalk Gaol. Malone was imprisoned until 19 September 1918 and upon his release states he resumed activities as a Volunteer.
During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) Malone states after RM Milling was shot in Westport and owing to his activities his home was raided several times and he was forced to go to England when ammunition was found in his workshop. He joined the St Helens Company, Liverpool Battalion in England and states he bought arms for T Ketterick and R Walsh, carried out raids on the mine pit and captured batteries. Malone states he then returned to Mayo where he joined the West Mayo Active Service Unit (Flying Colum/ASU) and held up a train after Kilmeena Ambush and was part of the Carrowkennedy Ambush.
During the Truce period Malone states he was the Officer Commanding of Signalling and later the Battalion Commandant and carried out duties for these roles.
During the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) Malone took the anti-treaty side and states he sniped enemy outposts at Westport and Castlebar and took part in an attack on The Mall, Castlebar. He states he was arrested on 5 September 1922 and was sent to Athlone internment camp, Mountjoy Jail and Tintown No 2 Camp in the Curragh. He states he worked on a tunnel in Athlone and was one of the officers in charge of working on the tunnel at Tintown Camp which resulted in eighty two prisoners escaping on 23 April 1923. Upon his release Malone returned to work in his area with the ASU and carrying our Brigade officer duties, he claims he was on the run until 1924.
