Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service for part of the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1921. Following the Easter Rising Balfe was not arrested and re-joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917. States that his home was used as an arms dump and that during the War of Independence took part in raids for arms and petrol at Enniscorthy Railway Station. States that his brothers James, Michael, Ned and Phil were all involved during the period.
