File relates to Patrick Naughton's unsuccessful application for a military service pension in respect of his claimed service with the Irish Volunteers, the IRA and the National Forces. The Board of Assessors recognised service between 1 July 1922 and 30 September 1923.
Claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1915 or 1916 and took part in routine activities. Mentions that he was involved in election work. States that he joined the 3 Battalion Active Service Unit (Flying Column) in November 1920.
States that he enlisted in the National Forces on 8 August 1922 and was discharged as medically unfit on 9 March 1924.

File (4P1215) relates to Naughton's application for a wound pension or gratuity under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of injuries sustained by him while serving with the IRA.
States that he lost his right hand following the premature explosion of a bomb he was preparing for an attack on British forces at Aughagower, County Mayo on 27 April 1921. The Minister also consented to the supply of two artificial hands (right) with a set of working appliances.
Claimed in a letter from a Timothy Cullen (4 Byron Road, Leyton, London) that Naughton lost his hand "trying to kill John Kilcoyne of Drummindoo, Westport" rather than on active service. No further action was taken by the department on foot of this letter.
Applicant states that Joseph Ring brought him to Dublin and assisted him in getting an artificial hand. Says that Ring brought him into the National Army. Says that he was put as a dispatch carrier.
