Subject Information File relates to Bridget Gibbon’s receipt of a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 in respect of her service Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 01 April 1920 and 11 July 1921 during the War of Independence. She unsuccessfully applied for service in the service periods between 01 April 1916 and 31 March 1920 and between 12 July 1921 and 30 September 1923. Gibbons was awarded 1 and 1/16 for pension purposes in 1956 at Grade E under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Bridget Gibbons (née Kelly) states that she was attached to Westport Company, Cumann na mBan and was on active duty until 30 April 1916 during Easter Week. She states that she was Branch Captain of Brocagh (Brockagh) Branch, [2 Battalion], West Mayo Brigade under the command of Willie O’Malley and Patrick Kelly. Archivist’s Note: Bridget Kelly is listed as Branch Captain of Brockagh Branch on the first (July 1921) and second (July 1921) critical dates. See nominal roll MA-MSPC-CMB-28, page 05. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) under the command of Michael Gallagher and Willie Rice, the subject claims that she took part in dispatch work and transporting munitions. Further claims that she was on active service during IRA attacks on British forces at Kilmeena and Skerdagh (both County Mayo). During the Truce period, Bridget Gibbons states she was engaged in similar activity. Taking the anti Treaty side in the Civil War, the subject claims that she was engaged in routine activity under the command of John Kelly. It is stated on file that she emigrated to United States of America (USA) in 1926 or 1927. File contains references in support of the subject’s claim from Nora Kelly (1954). Subject did not appear before the Advisory Committee. File also includes material relating to the settlement and closure of Bridget Gibbon’s account following her death on 14 January 1981.
