Subject Information |
File relates to Marion Moles’ unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 23 April 1916 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
It is stated on file that Marion Moyles and her late husband JF Moles, solicitor, joined Sinn Féin in Castlebar, County Mayo in 1914 and that she was a founding member of Cumann na mBan. Marion Moyles states that she was ‘standing to’ awaiting further orders during Easter Week 1916. Claims that she was attached to Castlebar Branch, [1 Battalion], West Mayo Brigade, Cumann na mBan under the command of John Chambers. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), the subject claims that she was active in procuring information for IRA forces and dispatch work.
Taking the anti Treaty side in the Civil War, the subject claims that she was engaged in similar work.
File contains references in support of the subject’s claim from B Mac Aodhgáin (1936) and A MacBride (1936). Subject did not appear before the Advisory Committee.
File DP3404 relates to subject’s request for a military service pensions application form in June 1934.
