Subject Information File relates to John Walsh's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1921 and 30 June 1922 and with the National Forces for part of the periods between 1 July 1922 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods. Claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1915 and that he took part in routine activities. Says that he was a member of the O'Rahilly's bodyguard in Westport in March 1916. Says too that he mobilised in Easter Week, 1916. States that he later joined the Active Service Unit (Flying Column); cut roads; dispatch work; Kilmeena ambush; Clogher Cross ambush. Noted in references that he took part in the burning of Moyrisk and [Ayle] barracks. States that he enlisted in the National Forces on 25 July 1922 in Westport, County Mayo. Demobilsed on 7 March 1924 at the rank of Lieutenant. States that he received a supplementary grant of £100 upon demobilisation.
