File relates to Tilly O’Donnell’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of her service with Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 01 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Subject unsuccessfully applied for service in the service periods between 01 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. O’Donnell was awarded 2 years service for pension purposes in 1942 at Grade E under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934.
Tilly O’Donnell (née McGovern) states that she was Branch Secretary and Branch Treasurer of F Company (Tiernaur), 2 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade, Cumann na mBan under the command of Michael McNamara, John J Connolly and her brother Lawrence McGovern. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), the subject claims that she was engaged in first-aid training; fundraising (concerts, plays etc.); storing arms and ammunition; supplying food and clothing to members of IRA Active Service Unit (ASU) and dispatch work.
During the Truce period, Tilly O’Donnell states that she took part in fundraising.
Taking the anti Treaty side in the Civil War, the subject clams that she rendered first-aid to wounded IRA men in Rosturk Castle field hospital which was in her company area; brought wounded men Anthony Keane and D Kill by to safety by boat from Rosturk Castle; billeting IRA men on the run and providing clothes and food to IRA men on the run.
