Subject Information
File relates to Rose Anne Connolly‘s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act 1934. Connolly states she was a member of the Belmullet Branch of Cumann na mBan in County Mayo. During the War of Independence (January 1919 - July 1921) she states she carried dispatches, raised funds for the cause, enabled the use of her place of business (a public house) as a covering address for dispatches and assisted with communications between officers and volunteers. During the Truce period Connolly claims her place of business was used as head quarters for the local IRA units. During the Civil War (June 1922 - May 1923) she states she procured ammunition from the enemy, obstructed National Forces from capturing IRA troops on 15 September 1922 and did other intelligence work. File includes: letter of reference from Michael Kilroy (9 September 1939); sworn statement of Rose Anne Connolly (7 October 1939).
