Subject Information File relates to Thomas Joseph Hevey’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1919 and 30 September 1923 and during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 30 April 1916 and 31 March 1919. File also relates to subject’s application under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of injuries received arising from beatings allegedly inflicted on him while a prisoner at Athlone in October or November 1922 and at Mountjoy Prison in September 1923. This application was withdrawn by Thomas Hevey before the completion of the investigation. Thomas Joseph Hevey stated that he joined Na Fianna Éireann in Westport, County Mayo in 1917 and transferred to the Irish Volunteers in Westport in October of that year. Subject stated that in March 1918 he was arrested and detained for a few days. In early 1919 he took part in a raid for petrol at Westport [Railway Station] and in the burning of a police hut at Carrowkennedy. From 1919 until the end of the War of Independence on 11 July 1921 Thomas Hevey stated that he: assisted the Brigade Adjutant Edward Moane on organisational work in the West Mayo Brigade; capture a British soldier’s equipment at Westport in October 1919; acted as Brigade Quartermaster for an unspecified period while the Quartermaster Thomas Ketterick was wounded; assisted in the organisation of the West Mayo Brigade Active Service in November 1920 – Thomas Hevey was also a member of this unit; took part in [sniping] attacks on RIC posts at Drummin, Newport and Castlebar in early 1921; mobilised for an aborted operation at Muisk on 17 March 1921; took part in attack on RIC lorries at Carnaclay, Westport in late March 1921; took part in engagements at Kilmeena, Skirdagh, Newport and Carrowkennedy (May and June 1921); took part in the occupation of Westport in an abortive attempt to engage British forces – date not on file. During the Truce period Thomas Hevey states that he: took part in an IRA training camp; served in IRA garrisons/barracks in Mayo at Westport Workhouse, Castlebar Barracks and Collooney, County Sligo; was appointed Brigade Adjutant and was involved in organisational and training work. Following the outbreak of the Civil War Thomas Hevey stated that he took part in a number of unspecified minor engagements with National Army forces before being captured near Glenhest at the end of July /beginning of August. He was detained at Athlone from which he escaped about 22 August 1922. He states that a few days later he then took part in an engagement at Brize, County Mayo at which he was captured by National Army forces. He was then detained at Claremorris, Athlone, Mountjoy and Tintown No 1 Internment Camp until escaping in early 1923 – exact date not on file. Following his escape Thomas Hevey joined an Active Service Unit in Wicklow under the command of Neil Boyle aka Sean Plunkett. Thomas Hevey states that while with this unit he took part in sniping attacks at Blessington, Tallaght, Naas and Glendalough. Thomas Hevey was again captured in June 1923 and interned at Naas, Mountjoy and Kilmainham Prison before being released in December 1923.
