Subject Information File relates to Joseph Gillivan's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1918 and 31 March 1923 including during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed for service in all other periods between 1 April 1916 and 30 September 1923. Subject claimed that he was a member of Na Fianna Éireann in Westport at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising and mobilised twice under arms during the week. Joseph Gillivan stated that he transferred to the Irish Volunteers in about 1917. Subject and references stated that between then and the end of the War of Independence Joseph Gillivan used his position as an employee with the Midland Great Western Railway to act as a despatch carrier between the West Mayo Brigade and IRA GHQ and specifically between Westport and Castlerea and Athlone. It is also stated that he also assisted by carrying arms and ammunition on trains he was working on and that he worked in association with Patrick Daly (MSP38348) during 1920. Subject claimed that during the Truce period he was primarily involved in Belfast boycott work as well as a much reduced amount of despatch work. It is stated on file that Joseph Gillivan was appointed Brigade Director of Communications in about August 1921. During the Civil War he again assisted in the transport of arms and despatches but states that the system was much more disorganised than it had been during the War of Independence. It is also stated that he provided information about National Army troop movements. Joseph Gillivan did not have to go on the run and was not arrested. File includes: material submitted by Joseph Gillivan in support of his application; statements regarding subject's service from Gárda Síochána Chief Superintendent E Duffy, Edward Moane TD, Thomas Kitterick and Séamus Mac Giobáin (James Gibbons); summary (1 page) and transcript (3 pages) of sworn statement made by Joseph Gillivan before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 on 28 May 1937; standard form Referee R.15 showing subject's rank as of 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 from records supplied by E Moane; notes relating to discussions held with "Messrs [McGiffee], Costello, Mannion [and] Ramsay", "Messrs Kilroy, Moane [and] Daly", "Messrs Kilroy [and] Moane" and "Kilroy"; material relating to the settlement and closure of Joseph Gillivan's military service pension following his death on 23 March 1957; material relating to the granting of a widows' allowance to Julia Gillivan née Derrig in 1971; material relating to the settlement and closure of Julia Gillivan's widows' allowance following her death on 31 October 1981 - partly closed for reasons of data protection.
