File relates to James Hughes’ receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1920.
Subject and references state that James Hughes joined Na Fianna Éireann in Castlebar in 1915, stood to at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising and transferred to the Irish Volunteers in 1918. During 1918 James Hughes took part in anti-Conscription activity and election work. During the War of Independence James Hughes: took part in raids for arms; assisted in the seizure of rate books, income tax documents and legal documents from solicitors offices; the capture of two British intelligence officers – date not on file; joined the West Mayo Brigade Active Service Unit in early 1921; mobilised for attacks in 1920 and 1921 at Glenisland, Westport and Islandeady which did not come off; and took part in engagements with British forces at Kilmeena and Skirdagh in May 1921.
During the Truce period James Hughes took part in IRA training camps, the taking over of Castlebar Barracks and Jail and was appointed Company Officer Commanding.
Following the outbreak of the Civil War James Hughes took part in the evacuation and burning of Castlebar Barracks. He was captured by National Army forces at Glenhest in late July/early August 1922 and was interned in Westport, Castlebar, Athlone and the Curragh. James Hughes escaped with Thomas Mullins after ten months internment – exact date not on file – but was recaptured a week later at Celbridge. He states that he was then held in Naas, Keogh Barracks and Gormanstown until being released in late November 1923. He also states that he was on hunger strike for an unspecified period of time while in Gormanstown.
