Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920. Patrick Joseph Cannon claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers from June or July 1917 onwards. Subject and references state that during the War of Independence Patrick Cannon served as a Company Adjutant, a Column Leader with an active service unit and as Battalion vice Officer Commanding. Following the outbreak of the Civil War Patrick Cannon: took part in the evacuation and burning of Castlebar Military Barracks in July 1922; assisted in carrying out raids on and arresting unnamed individuals organising for the National Army; was arrested in Castlebar about 4 August 1922 after returning to his work “…to get things straightened out…”. He was subsequently interned in Athlone, Mountjoy and Tintown until escaping from the latter on 22 April 1923. He was recaptured at Celbridge two days later and then interned in Gormanstown and Newbridge until released in December 1923.
