Subject Information |
File relates to Ernest Bernard O'Malley's receipt of a military service pension and a Disability Pension under the Army Pensions Acts in relation to his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA for part or all of the various periods between 1 April 1916 and 30 September 1923 during the Easter Rising, War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War.
According to statements provided on file by O'Malley and others, during his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in the War of Independence Ernest O'Malley served as a General Headquarters Staff Officer and Officer Commanding 2 Southern Division. Between 1918 and 1920 he undertook organisational work for the Irish Volunteers and IRA in counties Tyrone, Offaly, Roscommon, Donegal, Clare, Tipperary, Limerick, Cork and Kilkenny often taking part in attacks on British forces in these areas. Following his escape from British custody in February 1921 Ernest O' Malley took command of 2 Southern Division IRA. During the Truce period and Civil War O'Malley served with the anti-Treaty IRA (Irregulars) as Director of Organisation, Officer Commanding South Eastern Command and North and East Command as well as Assistant Chief of Staff to Liam Lynch. Taking part in the fighting against National Army forces in Dublin in June 1922, O'Malley was taken prisoner after the capture of the Four Courts escaping shortly afterwards. He was again captured at Ailesbury Road, Dublin in November 1922, when he was severely wounded, and imprisoned until 1924.
File also contains details of injuries arising from wounds received by Ernest O' Malley on five occasions between May 1918 and November 1922 as well as to cardiac disease and neurasthenia deemed to be arising from or attributable to his service and the hunger strike undertaken by him during his imprisonment in 1923.
File includes: signed typed statements from Ernest O'Malley regarding his service and the circumstances surrounding the various wounds received by him during his service submitted in support of his application under the Army Pensions Acts; signed typed and handwritten statements regarding Ernest O'Malley's service from Oscar Traynor TD, Senator Seamus Robinson, Donal O'Hannigan and Daniel Grace; medical certificates, reports and examinations; material (2 March 1953 - 11 May 1954), including memos, correspondence, letters and other documentation involving the Army Pensions Board, Army Finance Office, officials of the departments of Defence and Finance, the office of the Attorney General, Ernest O' Malley and L. Kevin O' Malley (subject's brother), regarding the provision of treatment for Ernest O'Malley at St. Bricin's Hospital, Dublin between 12 March and 27 July 1953 and the question of whether this should be paid for by Ernest O' Malley himself or by the State and if by the state the mechanism by which this could be achieved; and material relating to two (2) of subject's brothers and one (1) of his sons - partly closed.
