| Subject Information |
File relates to Anna Gibbons-Hynes’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act 1934 and her successful application for a service (1917-1921) medal which was issued in 1951.
Gibbons-Hynes states she was a member of Killavally Branch of Cumann na mBan in County Mayo from 1917 up to the end of the Civil War in 1923. In the lead up to and during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) Gibbons-Hynes states she attended meetings and classes, helped organise dances to raise funds, housed and fed IRA men and assisted Active Service Unit/ASU (Flying Column) men before and after Tourmakeady ambush. During the Truce period she states she attended first aid classes. During the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), taking the anti-treaty side, she claims she assisted the IRA after Newport ambush and carried dispatches.
