Subject Information File relates to Thomas O’Reilly's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers for part of the period between 1 April 1916 and 31 March 1917 and with the IRA for part or all of the various periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. On 24 March 1916 Thomas O’Reilly was sentenced to six weeks imprisonment for his role in the purchasing of arms from members of the British Army in Dublin - John Shaw was sentenced to six (6) months hard labour for his role. He was released on 5 May 1916. During the War of Independence subject assisted in the supply of transport and storage and transportation of material for the IRA. During 1922 Thomas O’Reilly served as Assistant Director of Transport IRA Four Courts General Headquarters and took part in the fighting against National Army forces in Dublin at the outbreak of the Civil War in June of that year during which he was captured. O’Reilly was released in October 1922 but was rearrested and interned from January 1923 for approximately four (4) months allegedly for his activities as a member of Dublin Corporation. File includes: original signed handwritten and typed and copy typed statements regarding subject's service from Andrew Doyle, P. MacIonnraic (Frank Henderson), Sean Prendergast, Thomas Hoban and N. Laffan; typed summary and transcript of sworn statement made by Thomas O’Reilly on 30 July 1940 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; handwritten notes relating to discussions held with S. Prendergast and unnamed verifying officers regarding claimant's service; handwritten certified copy supplied by the Record Office of Ireland of Quarter Sessions held at Green Street on 24 March 1916 in the cases of Mahony v. Shaw and Mahony v. Reilly - extracted from entries in Appeals to Quarter Sessions, July 1908 - July 1919, Crown and Peace Office, County and City of Dublin; and handwritten and typed notes of discussions held with Joseph Turner, Mr Prendergast and Thomas O’Reilly on 19 December 1944 regarding O’Reilly's appeal against his original service pension award.
