Subject Information
File relates to Sarah Jane Walsh‘s (neé Gill) unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act 1934 and successful application for service (1917-1921) medal which was issued in 1955. Walsh states she was a member of the Westport Cumann na mBan company from 1 April 1921 till 30 September 1923. During the War of Independence (January 1919 - July 1921) Walsh claims she catered for the Column men (Active Service Unit). During the Civil War (June 1922 - May 1923) she states she carried dispatches, did scout duty, helped transport arms and did intelligence work. File includes: application for service (1917-1921) medal (issued 1950); letter of reference from Thomas J Gill (3 February 1969); application for Special Allowance (17 October 1955). DP20603 file contains material and correspondence relating to Sarah Jane Walsh‘s successful applications for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts. She was initially informed that her yearly means exceeded the appropriate annual sum £130.0.0 (1955) however her application was reassesed following appeal. File includes: Special Allowance award certificate (29 November 1955); social welfare reports (1952 -1960); handwritten document assessing means of applicant (4 July 1958); handwritten document detailed applicant’s husband’s (Patrick Walsh) means; handwritten documents outlining the applicant’s husband’s unknown location in England and his lack of contribution to the household (13 June 1956 – 10 March 1960); medical reports (5 August 1953; 11 February 1956).
