File relates to Margaret Moran’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 01 April 1917 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Subject was awarded a Service (1917-1921) Medal in 1942, information held on file.
Subject states that she and her husband Thomas Moran (IRA Company Intelligence Officer) ran a grocery and pubic house in Mulranny, County Mayo. Claims that she joined Tiernaur Branch, 2 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade, Cumann na mBan in January 1918. During the War of Independence (January 1919 - July 1921) under the command of Katie O’Donnell, Michael McNamara, John J Connolly and Lawrence McGovern, she states that she took part in first-aid training; fundraising and procuring 200 rounds of ammunition from a policeman’s wife and passing it onto IRA
During the Truce period, Margaret Moran states that she catered for IRA men at training camp at Stoney’s Castle (Rosturk Castle), County Mayo.
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 - May 1923), the applicant claims that her husband constructed an armoured car called ‘The Queen of the West’ and she was active when IRA forces occupied The Mulranny Hotel and had a hospital in Stoney’s Castle (Rosturk Castle) States that National Forces smashed up her grocery and she was out of business for two years.
File includes handwritten notes from discussions regarding applicant’s service with Messrs Kilroy and Moane (19 November 1940); Lawrence McGovern (21 January 1941) and Mr Kilroy (16 December 1941). File also contains handwritten and typed references in support of the applicant’s claim from Lawrence McGovern (1940); E Moane (1940); John Connolly (1938); John R Gibbons (1942) and Dr JA Madden (1942). File contains a statement and summary of evidence given before the Advisory Committee by the applicant on 17 December 1940.
File DP23613 contains material and correspondence relating to Margaret Moran’s successful application for a Special Allowance under the Army Pensions Acts. File includes completed form; medical report; representations by PA Calleary TD (1953-58) and Michael Kilroy (1954); signed handwritten reports from Social Welfare investigating officers regarding applicant’s financial circumstances (1953-55) (some closed) and material relating to the payment of the balance of the Special Allowance and funeral grant following applicant’s death (1958).
