Subject Information
File relates to Annie McGovern's unsuccessful application for a military service pension in respect of her claimed service with Cumann na mBan for part of the periods between 1 April 1918 and 30 September 1923. Claims that she joined Cumann na mBan in 1917 and served with F Company, 2 Battalion, West Mayo Brigade. States that she attended first aid classes; carried dispatches; collected funds. Mentions that she stored munitions for the IRA. Mentions that her brother was a member of the Active Service Unit (Flying Column) and that she was in close contact with the column. McGovern states that she brought food and cigarettes to her brother after he was wounded, captured and imprisoned in Galway. Says that her home was constantly raided by British forces. During the Civil War applicant states that she rendered first aid to members of the column and that she continued her dispatch work. File contains: typed transcript and summary of sworn evidence given by the claimant before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 (11 March 1938); material concerning application for a Service (1917-1921) Medal without Bar; reference from Laurence McGovern, John Connolly, Michael Gaugh; handwritten notes of discussions held with verifying officers.
