File relates to Nora Burke’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 01 April 1917 and 11 July 1921 during the War of Independence.
Nora Burke states that she was a member of the Aughagower Branch, [3 Battalion], West Mayo Brigade, Cumann na mBan under the command of Mrs O Brain. During the War of Independence (January 1919 - July 1921), the subject claims that she took part in first-aid training; fundraising; dispatch work and catering for IRA members on the run.
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 - May 1923), Nora Burke states that she took part in similar activity including procured ammunition from National Army soldiers in Westport, County Mayo.
Nora Burke did not appear before the Advisory Committee and did not provide any references.
