File relates to Bridget Burke’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act 1934. Burke states she was a member of Killawalla (also known as Killavally) Branch of Cumann na mBan in County Mayo from 1916 up to the end of the Civil War in 1923. From 1916 till 1918 Burke states she primarily raised funds for Volunteers. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) she states she partook in the usual activities; attending first aid lectures, provided IRA men with food and warned them of approach of enemy, carried dispatches and rendered first aid when needed. During the Truce period she states she partook in drilling and attended meetings and lectures. During the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923) Burke states she organised events to raise funds for prisoners, provided food, supplies to IRA men and did lookout duties for them. Subject did not provide references and did not appear before the Advisory Committee. File includes subject’s pension application and corresponding documents.
