File relates to Thomas Tunney's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA for part of the periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for other periods.
Claims that he joined the Irish Volunteers in 1917 and took part in routine activities. In 1918 Tunney states that he raided for arms and guarded prisoners. During the War of Independence applicant claims that he was involved in activities in County Mayo including: raids for arms; joined an Active Service Unit (Flying Column) under Joe Ring in the winter of 1920; assisted in the destruction of Carrowkennedy Barracks; lay in ambush at Croagh Patrick; Kilmeena ambush (7 May 1921); Carrowkennedy ambush (2 June 1921). States that he was in Westport Barracks at the outbreak of the Civil War and that he joined a Flying Column under the command of Patrick Duffy. Claims that he was in an engagement with National Army troops at Newport. Says that he was involved in intelligence work and helped to secure billets for the men. States that he was on the run but was able to return home after the fighting had ceased.
