File relates to John Kilroy's receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the Irish Volunteers and IRA in the service periods between 1 April 1917 and 30 September 1923.
John Kilroy claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers at the time of the 1916 Easter Rising. He claims that he mobilised under arms in Newport, County Mayo at the time of the Rising. During 1916 and 1917 he also claimed that he was involved in procuring and transferring arms as well as despatch work.
Between 1917 and his arrest by British forces in January 1921 John Kilroy states that he served as Battalion Intelligence Officer, did organisational work and was involved in manufacturing, procuring, transferring and repairing of arms and ammunition. Following his arrest Kilroy was interned in Galway Jail and Rath Internment Camp until December 1921.
Following his release John Kilroy resumed his IRA service. It is stated on file by J J Leonard that subject was appointed Assistant Divisional Intelligence Officer in April 1922. Kilroy stated that during the Civil War he took part in operations/attacks against National Army forces at Newport in September and November 1922 and Shramore in October 1922. He also states that he was in charge of munitions stores. John Kilroy was captured on 24 May 1923 and interned at Tintown Internment Camp on the Curragh until December of that year.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by John Kilroy in support of his service pension application; signed handwritten statement regarding subject's service from J J Leonard; typed transcript (2 pages) of sworn statement made by John Kilroy on 19 April 1935 before the Advisory Committee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934; [copy] typed document regarding the conviction of a Seán Kilroy on 15 July 1941 under Section 52 of the Offences Against the State Act, 1939 with initialled handwritten note dated 15 September 1941 stating that this individual is not the military service pensioner John Kilroy; and material relating to the settlement and closure of John Kilroy's military service pension following his death on 4 November 1963.
