| Subject Information |
File relates to Margaret Hester’s unsuccessful application for a military service pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Applicant claimed membership of Cumann na mBan in the service periods between 1 April 1918 and 30 September 1923.
Margaret Hester (née McGovern) states that she was attached to the Newport Branch, [2 Battalion], West Mayo Brigade, Cumann na mBan under the command of John Connolly, Ned Lyons and Josie Doherty. During the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921), the applicant claims that she was engaged in routine activities including dispatch work; first aid training and sheltering/catering for IRA men on the run.
Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), Margaret Hester took part in similar activities and also claims that her home was the Divisional Headquarters for a period.
File contains handwritten and typed references in support of the applicant’s claim from John Connolly (1938) and Annie Kilroy (1942). Subject did not appear before the Advisory Committee.
