File relates to Sean Clancy’s receipt of a military service pension in respect of his service with the IRA and National Forces in the service periods between 1 April 1920 and 30 September 1923 during the War of Independence, Truce period and Civil War. Applicant also claimed unsuccessfully for service in the periods between 1 April 1917 and 31 March 1920.
Sean Clancy claimed membership of the Irish Volunteers and the IRA from 1917 onwards.
Applicant was originally attached to Clonlara Company, East Clare Brigade before moving to Dublin.
Attached to B Company, 2 Battalion, 1 Dublin Brigade, IRA, it is stated that the applicant took part in a number of IRA operations and general activity during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) including: intelligence work, an ambush of Crown Forces at Whitehall (no date); an ambush of an enemy convoy at Dorset Street bridge (no date); an ambush of Crown Forces at the Bishop’s Palace, Drumcondra (no date); an ambush of Crown Forces at Clonliffe Road (no date); an ambush of Crown Forces in Ballybough during which IRA Volunteer B. McSweeney was wounded (no date); an ambush of an enemy convoy in Drumcondra traveling from Collinstown (no date); an ambush of Crown Forces at North Strand bridge (no date); an attack on a British Military car on Drumcondra Road (no date); an attempt to burn an enemy lorry in Whitehall (no date); a raid on Amiens Street train station (no date); an abortive attack on a Ford car, Botanic Road (no date); an attempted raid on Trinity College Dublin (TCD) to capture rifles (no date); bombing of an enemy lorry in Ballybough (no date); an ambush of Crown Forces at Fitzroy Avenue, Drumcondra and Drumcondra bridge (no dates); an attack on the London and North Western Hotel (no date) and house-to-house collection for purchase of arms (no dates).
During the Truce period (July 1921 – June 1922), the applicant took part in battalion training camps at Kilbarrack, Artane and Coolock. Following the truce, it is stated by references that he was engaged in Irish Republican Police duty.
Sean Clancy enlisted with the National Army in April 1922 at Portobello Barracks, Dublin. He was based with No 4 Battalion, County Limerick; 4 Battalion, Castlebar, County Mayo; Collins Barracks, Dublin; 5 Eastern Division, Griffith Barracks, Dublin until his retirement sometime between 1954 and 1962.
Applicant died aged 106 in September 2006. He was the “last veteran” in receipt of a Military Service Pension.
File includes: original handwritten material submitted and signed by Sean Clancy in support of his service pension application; original signed handwritten and typed statements regarding subject's service from Captain M. Connery; Superintendent Sean Gantly; Lieutenant Patrick Dineen; Lieutenant Kirwan P. Lord and material relating to the settlement and closure of Sea Clancy's service pension account following his death on 17 September 2006.
