Subject Information
File relates to Nora Walsh’s unsuccessful application for a Military Service Pension under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1934. Nora Walsh states that she joined the Castlebar Branch of Cumann na mBan in County Mayo in 1915 under the command of Annie M. Staunton (MSP34REF4420). During Easter Week 1916, she claims that she stood to but had no had no active service. As Branch Secretary under the command of Eileen Ryan and James Chambers (MSP34REF2993), the applicant states that during the War of Independence (January 1919 – July 1921) she was involved in dispatch work; fundraising; transporting ammunition and supplying food and clothes to IRA men on the run. Taking the anti-Treaty side in the Civil War (June 1922 – May 1923), Nora Walsh claims that she took part in routine activities. File includes handwritten references in support of the subject’s claim from James Chambers (1940) and Annie M. Staunton [1940]. File contains a summary of sworn evidence made by the applicant before the Advisory Committee on 13 March 1941.
