| Subject Information |
File relates to James Brady's application for a wound pension or gratuity under the Army Pensions Acts in respect of gunshot wounds received by him while serving with the National Army. States that he was wounded in the right hand and leg in Newport Barracks, County Mayo on 8 September 1922 (February 1922 also recorded).
Brady says that Commandant P Gibbons and a Private Cawley were injured in the same incident. Reference also made to another member of the National Army (Sergeant Sullivan) having been killed in the exchange. [Archivist Note - Re Sergeant Sullivan. Possibly referring to Sergeant Charles Sullivan (2D446) who died on 27 August 1922 from wound(s) received by him at Newport, County Mayo].
Applicant claims that his "wife was taken prisoner by the Irregulars when I was wounded".
Noted in reference from FP McNulty that members of the IRA had taken up position in the workhouse in Newport and that the National Forces attempted to remove them from the post resulting in the above incident.
States that he was attested in the National Forces on 26 July 1922 and was discharged on 20 February 1924 in consequence of reduction of the forces.
File contains: medical report on an ex-Soldier claiming disability in respect of service; copy medical examination sheet; references from Commandant M [Stephenson], FP McNulty and Garda Thomas P Sheridan.
