Scope and Content File relates to the efforts of the Office of the Referee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 to ascertain the strength of 2 Battalion, 1 Dublin Brigade, IRA on the first and second critical dates – 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 respectively – to assist in the processing of military service pension applications received under that legislation. This Battalion covered part of Dublin city and the material on file relates to both 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922. As well as the names of those concerned, membership listings on file may also include: addresses; whether interned/imprisoned; whether deceased; references to membership of the National Army/Defence Forces, Gárda Síochána; military service pension file references. File includes: membership lists for the staffs of the Battalion and the constituent companies and lists of the membership of the individual companies on 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922; pro forma, [created by officials of the Office of the Referee], entitled “Second Battn. Dublin Bde.” with entries under the headings “Company”, “11th July 1921”, “1st July 1922” and “Remarks”; list of members of A Company, 2 Battalion arrested during the Custom House operation; lists of 31 and 61 members of G Company, 2 Battalion – date(s) of service not indicated; copy of extract from Irish Independent newspaper of 3 April 1922 reporting the mobilisation of Dublin Brigade, IRA the previous day and giving details of the Brigade and battalion strengths as of January 1922; list of 15 members of ASU in November 1922 operating under 6 Battalion, 1 Dublin Brigade; letters, correspondence, notes and memoranda, involving former IRA officers, members of the IRA Brigade Committee and officials of the Office of the Referee, regarding the listings on file, queries arising from same, and referring to the applications of named military service pension applicants.
