| Scope and Content |
File relates to the efforts of the Office of the Referee, Military Service Pensions Act, 1934 to ascertain the strength of 3 Battalion, 2 Brigade, 1 Northern Division, IRA on the first and second critical dates – 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922 respectively – to assist in the processing of military service pension applications received under that legislation.
This Battalion covered part of County Donegal and the material on file relates to both 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922.
As well as the names of those concerned, membership listings on file may also include: addresses; whether interned/imprisoned; whether deceased; references to membership of the National Army/Defence Forces, Gárda Síochána; military service pension file references.
File includes: membership lists for the staffs of the Battalion and the constituent companies and lists of the membership of the individual companies on 11 July 1921 and 1 July 1922; pro forma, [created by officials of the Office of the Referee], with entries under the headings “Company”, “1st Critical Date”, “2nd Critical Date” and “Remarks”; hand drawn sketch map showing area covered by the Battalion and its constituent companies; listing of 50 individuals who joined B Company (Fanad West) during the Truce Period; letters and correspondence involving former IRA officers, members of the IRA Brigade Committee and officials of the Office of the Referee regarding the listings on file and referring to military service pension applications of named individuals.
Constituent units and companies with membership listings and/or figures (in brackets) on file for 11 July 1921 are: A (Fanad North) ( 35, 56, 57 and 75); B (Fanad West) (19, 66 and 67); C (Rossnakill) (18 and 42); D (Milford) (30, 35 and 95); E (Rathmullen) (39); F (Portsalon (11 and 43); G (Kerrykeel) (24, 30 and 33); Battalion staff (5 and 6).
Constituent units and companies with membership listings and/or figures (in brackets) on file for 1 July 1922 are: A (Fanad North) (34, 54 and 81); B (Fanad West) (6, 19 and 52); C (Rossnakill) (16 and 64); D (Milford) (2, 35 and 62); F (Portsalon) (10 and 33); G (Kerrykeel) (7, 10 and 17); Battalion staff (5).
Note that E Company (Rathmullen) is stated to have been non-existent on 1 July 1922.
