Title Irish Republican Army - List of Persons who died for Ireland from 1900-1921. Enquiries regarding participants in the Easter Rising
Scope and Content File contains correspondence regarding requests to obtain lists of casualties (either killed, executed or seriously wounded) during Easter Rising, the War of Independence and the Civil War. File contains handwritten and typed requests from Thomas Egan (6 Baynes Street, Camden Town, London), James Callery (112-10, 95, Avenue, Richmond Hill 19, Long Island, New York, USA). Another request submitted by Sean Patrick Martin (of 2133 Harrison Street, Oakland, California, USA) concerns his father, Eoin (John) Martin, born in Fermanagh (1863-64) who was interned in Kilmainham prison and who died in March 1921. The only list issued by the Department contains 62 names of known participants to Easter Rising killed or who died from their wounds, to which should be added the 16 leaders who were executed. Séamus Ó Muirí (Irish Bookbinders' Union) forwards a list of participants involved in the Easter Rising along with details of their service and employment. In a typed letter dated 7 July 1967 to Rev. C.Crowley (Belvedere Hall, Bray, Co.Wicklow), the Secretary to the Departement indicates that although the only list available is the record of the fatal casualties among those who took part in the 1916 Rising. 'Records indicate that of those who took part in the Rising 16 persons were executed and 62 others were killed or died of wounds received in the fighting. It is understood, however that the National Graves Association, 74 Dame Street, Dublin 2 is preparing such a list (...) the figure for the 1917-1921 period is likely to be in the region of 500 (icluding civilian casualties)'.
