Title Bills and Acts: Military Service Pensions Act, 1924 - Section 3-Board of Assessors 
Scope and Content File contains letters and correspondence, notes and minutes in draft and copy, in manuscript and type dealing mainly with matters relating to the initial appointments to the Board of Assessors and the Secretary to the Board, Memorandum for Government with recommendations for appointments to the re-constitution of the Board of Assessors for stated periods of time; advice from the Attorney General in specific instances and other matters under Section 3 of the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924; as well as reference and documentation relating to the appointments of the Referee and Advisory Committee members from 1934 to re-constitute the Board of Assessors at times thereafter to examine new cases or appeals ( /83 dated 11 March 1936) and to replace retired or resigning members, for example. Includes copy of resolution passed by Manulla Branch, Cumann na nGaedheal, 5 Parnell Square, Dublin regarding “unfair treatment” of applicants under the Military Service Act (/ 41 to /43 dated 26 July 1929) and an appeal from the General Executive of the Association of Old Dublin Brigade for the establishment of an “independent appeal board” to deal with rejected claims and note regarding Ministers' comments attached (/44 to /48 dated 25 March 1930). Further representations from the General Executive of the Association are received by the Minister for Lands and Fisheries and are forwarded to the Minister for Defence ( /54 to /59 dated 28 April 1930) File 2/1494 also includes copy of Report of the Board of Assessors constituted under the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924, signed in ink by the Chairman and the two members (/18 to/33 dated 1 October 1928); letters of appreciation for the work of the Board and Secretary to the Board. A series of Progress Reports, minutes and notes on the work of the Referee and Advisory Committee (/230 to /251, the latter dated 11 September 1958) are also to be found. Attached on inside file cover a “Temporary file” with the title “Attorney Generals Opinion of 28 February 1956-Interpretation of the First Schedule to the MSP (Military Service Pensions) Act, 1924”. This file deals with the question raised by the Board of Assessors as to an apparent “divergency” regarding awards for active service in Easter Week and continuous service from 1 April 1916 to 31 March 1917 as set out in the Act, 1924 and the provisions for the same periods contained in the Act of 1934. Includes a handwritten record of 28 pensioners with service of 1 year or less with details of name, account number and Force in which 1916 service was rendered, a printed copy of the Military Service Pensions Act, 1924 as well as a copy of the Attorney Generals opinion and note/correspondence/minute attached. The latter is noted by the Minister. (/253 to /286 dated 21 June 1956). File titled “Board of Assessors. Referee and Advisory Committee”(/287 to /292) found loose in file contains handwritten records on ruled and lined foolscap and includes details of the Board of Assessors under the following headings: Constituted on date, Chairman, Members (named in each case) and covers the period from 4 October 1924 to 23 December 1957 ;Referee and members of the Advisory Committee with name and service from [ date ] to [date] are recorded in each case commencing on 17 December 1934 and ending with the note: ”Referee and Advisory Committee concluded investigations on 31 Iuil (July) 1947” and “Reconstitution of Referee and Advisory Committee consequent on passing of MSP (Military Service Pensions ) Amendment Act, 1949”,with the same detail, commencing on 6 February 1950 and concluding 30 September 1958.
